What is the Kp index?

The Kp index measures global geomagnetic activity on a 0–9 scale. Higher Kp means aurora pushes further south. Kp 3 gives aurora across northern Norway, Kp 5–6 covers most of the country, and Kp 7+ are rare storms visible all the way to southern Norway.

Where in Norway can I see the aurora tonight?

At low Kp (1–2), Tromsø, Alta and Finnmark are your best bet. Kp 4 is often visible from Trondheim, Kp 5–6 from Bergen and Oslo, and Kp 7+ across the entire country — provided clear, dark skies away from city lights.

September through March, between 9 PM and 2 AM local time. Dark, clear nights away from light pollution give the best chance. Also check cloud cover and the moon phase — a full moon dims faint aurora.

How long does an aurora display last?

A substorm typically lasts 1–3 hours, but active nights may bring several waves. The most lively part — when the lights dance fast — often lasts only 10–30 minutes. Be patient and stay out long.

Can I see the aurora from a plane?

Yes. On northbound flights (e.g. Oslo–Tromsø, Reykjavík–London), the seat on the north side often gives a stunning view during active nights. Switch off the reading light and hold your phone against the window with shade around it.

Does a full moon affect the aurora?

A full moon brightens the sky and dims faint aurora. Strong aurora (Kp 5+) is clearly visible regardless, but for photography new moon or half moon is best. Check the moon phase before your trip.

How should I dress for aurora hunting?

Layer up: wool inner layer, fleece or down jacket in the middle, windproof outer shell. Heavy winter boots, hat, mittens (not gloves) and a scarf. You'll stand still for hours below −10 °C — never underestimate the cold.

Is the aurora dangerous?

No. The light itself is completely harmless. Strong geomagnetic storms can however affect satellites, GPS and power grids — the Carrington Event of 1859 set telegraph systems on fire. Such events are rare.

What is solar maximum and why is 2025–2026 special?

The Sun has an 11-year activity cycle. We are now near the peak (solar maximum), meaning significantly more geomagnetic storms and aurora visible further south. After 2027 activity declines again toward solar minimum around 2030.
